Ancient Wars: Sparta offers RTS fans all their favourite gameplay with a vast variety of new features and innovative options. Cities can be upgraded and turned to fortresses, workers gather resources to ensure a safe economy. The player can collect abandoned weapons after battles or import powerful weapons from other cultures to build special units. Warriors can be equipped with weapons and shields, can be put on horses or on chariots and be given special abilities. Players can strategically equip soldiers with weapons of choice. The main emphasis is on large-scaled battles and complex tactical manoeuvres. Sparta represents 3D strategy in real time with the newly developed Ancient Wars Engine (AWE), where the player will have to use each nations powers to be superior over other competitors and build up a dominant culture and civilisation. Following historical events, the action takes place with different campaigns for all three races. Spartans, Persians and Egyptians are fighting for influence around Asia Minor, Europe and North Africa. As with the rest of the PlayStation 3 launch lineup, you can expect that we'll be back with more as we near Crossfire's release next month.Ancient Wars: Sparta is based on the history of the ancient ages and their main nations. This tactic doesn't make much sense unless your other arm is blown off, since the shield is pretty damn useful.

You can still blow off individual limbs by targeting them and you can dump your shield on the floor to free up an additional arm. Little has changed in the area of weapons, as well as targeting and how you deal with damage. The game still moves somewhat slowly - symptoms of it trying to straddle the line between arcade action and mech simulation. When it comes to actual gameplay and combat, there's not much new to say that hasn't already popped up in previous articles. It's nothing too fancy or flashy, but it gets the job done. Visually, the garage looks pretty basic - it had grey walls on all four sides and the mobile suit stood in the middle. You can purchase parts, such as arms, legs and cannons, to make sure your mobile suit stays relevant.

Speaking of repairs, the demo also showed off the garage where you build, repair and upgrade. As such, you may find yourself outgunned and outclassed if you sit on your metallic laurels for too long. This should have pretty dire consequences too, as you won't earn credits or experience during the tasks you miss. Whenever you select a new mission the globe spins around to focus on the area you're soon to visit, but in an interesting twist, missions appear chronologically so you can actually take too long doing something (such as repairing your suit). These are found on an overworld map, which is really just a simple wireframe image of the Earth. Once you graduate the tutorial, you move on to harder missions. Simple as it is, it certainly helps you learn the controls and basic tactics. It's a pretty basic assignment - you'll find enemy bots at the opposite end of town and blow them to smithereens. The mission has you investigate a crumbling town for three enemy mobile suits. Like many titles, this first mission is a tutorial of sorts, only you can still die. After watching it, and receiving a quick lesson on future history in the process, the game actually starts. The video opener looks a little like the documentary-style cutscenes from Ace Combat. Specifically, it took us through the very start of the Federation campaign, which kicks off with an opening movie. Beyond this, the demo for Crossfire showed some areas that no one had really seen before today. It also packed more enemies onscreen at once and boasted improved texture work. It ran smoother and benefited from improved control, for starters. The version on display at Sony's Gamer Day fared a lot better.

It looked great, make no mistake about that, but it just didn't play all that well. Originally it looked irrefutably rough and failed to impress the crowds.
